Good men’s waxing aftercare starts before your appointment. Preparing your skin and caring for it afterwards helps you get the best results and reduces the risk of irritation.
At Emerald Grooming, I provide professional men’s waxing treatments in a private, one-to-one studio in Titchfield, Fareham. Clients visit from Portsmouth, Gosport, Southampton, Winchester, Andover and across Hampshire.
Whether you’re booking back, chest, body or intimate waxing, follow these simple preparation and aftercare steps.
How to Prepare for Men’s Waxing
Allow Enough Hair Growth
Aim for hair around 5–6 mm long, roughly the length of a grain of rice. This gives the wax enough hair to grip.
Avoid shaving immediately before your appointment. If you’re unsure whether your hair is long enough, get in touch before booking. You can also find answers to common questions on the men’s waxing FAQ page.
Exfoliate Gently Before Your Appointment
Gentle exfoliation removes dead skin cells and can help reduce ingrown hairs.
Use a soft exfoliating mitt, a mild body scrub or chemical exfoliante as part of your regular routine. Once or twice a week may be enough, depending on your skin.
Leave at least 48 hours between exfoliating the treatment area and your appointment. Avoid scrubbing skin that is sore, irritated or broken.
Check Your Skincare Products and Medication
Tell me before your appointment if you use retinol, prescription retinoids, exfoliating acids or medication that affects your skin. We may need to adjust or postpone your treatment.
A standard 48-hour break is not suitable for every product or medication. Do not stop prescribed medication without advice from your prescriber.
If you take isotretinoin, also known as Roaccutane, do not have waxing treatments while taking it. If you have recently finished treatment, check with your prescriber before booking. Read the NHS guidance on isotretinoin and treatments to avoid.
Avoid Sunburn and Irritated Skin
During the days before your appointment, avoid sunbathing, sunbeds and activities that leave your skin hot or irritated.
Waxing cannot be carried out over sunburnt, broken or inflamed skin. Please contact me before your visit if the treatment area is sore or you have a new skin concern.
Arrive with Clean Skin
Shower before your appointment and wear clean, loose-fitting clothes.
Leave the treatment area free from:
- Body lotions and moisturising creams
- Bath oils and other oily products
- Heavy skincare products
Clean skin helps the wax grip the hair effectively. Loose clothing also helps keep you comfortable afterwards.
Men’s Waxing Aftercare: The First 24–48 Hours
Your skin may look slightly red or feel sensitive after waxing. Treat it gently while it settles, and follow any individual aftercare advice given at your appointment.
For the first 24–48 hours, avoid:
- Very hot baths or showers
- Saunas, steam rooms and other heat treatments
- Vigorous exercise that causes heavy sweating
- Sunbathing and sunbeds
- Swimming in chlorinated pools
- Tight clothing that rubs the waxed area
- Perfumed products, harsh scrubs and exfoliating acids
Use lukewarm water when washing and pat the skin dry gently. Keep your hands away from the area as much as possible, and use only the aftercare products recommended for your skin.
After intimate waxing, avoid sexual activity while the skin is tender, as friction can increase irritation.
Ongoing Men’s Waxing Aftercare
Moisturise Regularly
Once your skin has settled, use a gentle moisturiser suitable for the area. Regular moisturising helps keep your skin comfortable between appointments.
If a product stings or causes redness, stop using it and ask for advice.
Restart Gentle Exfoliation
Wait until any redness and tenderness have gone before exfoliating again. This may take a few days.
Start gently, once or twice a week, and adjust the frequency to suit your skin. Scrubbing harder or more often can cause irritation.
Look After Ingrown Hairs
Ingrown hairs can happen after waxing or other hair-removal methods. Gentle exfoliation once your skin has recovered may help, but no routine can prevent every ingrown hair.
Avoid picking or squeezing bumps, as this can damage your skin and lead to infection. Read the NHS guidance on preventing and treating ingrown hairs for further advice.
See a GP if an area becomes very painful, hot or swollen, or if you develop a high temperature or feel unwell. Seek advice if irritation persists or gets worse.
When Should You Book Your Next Wax?
Many clients book every four to six weeks, although the best timing depends on your hair growth and the area being treated.
Allow the hair to grow between appointments rather than shaving it. We can discuss a routine that suits you during your visit.
Appointments at Emerald Grooming must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.
